Flicker

Just a little flame

quick to burn out

just a little something to keep you warm between bodies

is that what I was to you?

what we were?

just a small flame,

flickering in the dark until the wax dripped down completely and the wick burnt out,

until there was nothing left to be said.

just flickering until it is dark

and boys like you always run when the lights go out

afraid that the monsters hiding in your dirty laundry may come out to speak for themselves.

I thought we were more than a mere flash of light but it seems you just saw us
