Not About Angels

As some of you may know, “Not About Angels” is a song by 18 year old British phenomenon, Birdy. It was used in the soundtrack for the newly produced, book based The Fault In Our Stars movie. That book happened to be my favorite book, and one of my favorite actresses and favorite actor starred in the movie. As coincidental as that was, that is not what this post is about.

This song has so much meaning, and I can connect with it so much. I absolutely adore Birdy’s voice, and it just tied together the flowing lyrics with the enchanting piano. I will insert the lyrics, and put my thoughts and connections in italics underneath each.

We know full well there’s just time
So is it wrong to toss this line?
If your heart was full of love
Could you give it up?
I love this. To me, she’s saying along the lines of “if your life was finally pieced back together, if you finally felt whole again, could you accept that you had to give that up, even if you had no choice?”

‘Cause what about, what about angels?
They will come, they will go, make us special
Angels come into our lives, for example, my mom. They touch so many lives and spread so much love and inspire everywhere. They also will go, and leave us to return back to their home. We become inspired, changed, and a different person because if them. They make their mark, they make us special.

Don’t give me up
Don’t give…
Me up
We never want those we love to leave us, as much pain or suffering they have endured. We love them so much and we can’t imagine being without them. We don’t want them to let go, we can’t them to hold on.

How unfair, it’s just our love
Found something real that’s out of touch
But if you’d searched the whole wide world
Would you dare to let it go?
Sometimes, there is nothing we can do to help the angels in our lives. I still remember so vividly, sitting on the bed next to my Ma, crying my eyes out, as I told her “It’s okay to let go, Mama. It’s okay.” That was my most painful moment, knowing that a cure and help were so far out of reach, but still yearning and begging for their presence.

‘Cause what about, what about angels?
They will come, they will go, make us special
Like I said before, in the previous verse of this.
Don’t give me up
Don’t give…
Me up
” “

‘Cause what about, what about angels?
They will come, they will go, make us special
” “

It’s not about not about angels, angels
It isn’t about the angels themselves, it’s about how they change us and impact our lives. It’s about the love they give and the memories they make with us. It’s about the lessons they teach us and the inspiration they give us.
